The Call of Duty games have reached a brand new milestone. According to Activision the franchise has sold some 55 million units worldwide, and due to the massive popularity of Modern Warfare 2 the series has now made a total $3 billion in international sales.

"If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history."

It seems the stars aligned perfectly for Activision and their release of Modern Warfare 2. With just the right amount of polish, hype, and a nicely placed pre-holiday release date, the game's sales have helped the franchise break a whole new record.

The sales not only send a message to the rest of the world on how video games have evolved but will also help the industry, which saw a big slump earlier this year.
