We were fortunate enough to get a private viewing of Avalanche’s Just Cause 2 at E3 this year. I was never personally a fan of the franchise, but I sure have been converted! We got an exclusive look at the game play, and it was a whole lot of awesome! Here is our look at Just Cause 2. Plot: Environments: You will be playing in a completely open world environment, in which you will explore the South East Asian Island of Panau. There is a total of 400 sq. miles of exploration with 260 settlements, all of which you can free roam. The environments vary between snowy mountain ranges, deserts, jungles, and sunny beaches with annoying tourists. All of the environments of the island are subject to weather changes as well as day & night cycles. Playing on the island does not confine your game play in any way; it is massive and full of rich and various environments. Running on the Avalanche 2.0 system, Just Cause 2 will have similar game play style to its predecessor. Rico will be equipped with two major items, the grappling hook and his parachute. Both made an appearance in the previous game, and both are essential to your progression. With the parachute you will be able to do various stunts including base-jumping, para sailing, and vehicle surfing. Base-jumping is one of the more exhilarating forms of game play in which you can free fall from mountaintops, as well as sky scrappers. Your grappling hook is wrist mounted, and is another key feature of “platforming," as you can us it to scale high locations and swing across obstacles, as well as grapple vehicles and enemies. As far as combat goes, you can use your grappling hook to do some of the most satisfying things I have ever seen in a video game. You will be able to use it to pull enemies towards you for close combat, attach enemies together, attach enemies to moving vehicles, and even attach them to explosives that you can detonate once clear. The amount of crazy stuff you can do with your grappling hook is insane, and it is an insanely enjoyable element of combat.
Just Cause 2 is slated for release in 2010 for PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows.
