Wet the Grindhouse Game Bethesda's Grindhouse offering, Wet - has been one of the games that regardless of your opinion, you couldn't help but have an interest. Watching the trailer, you'll probably raise an eyebrow saying, "this could be interesting." The Grindhouse style of the game has attracted the game community but is it a worthwhile experience?
Rubi Malone: hired gun In Wet you take the role of Rubi Malone, hit woman and gun-for-hire. She is hired by a wealthy client (voice by Malcolm McDowell) with a less than stellar reputation. Her mission is to track down her client's son who has gone MIA and left the family for a good time in Hong Kong, or so you thought. It turns out your client has different motives for hiring you. A double cross takes place, revenge is pursued, and a body count soon follows.
What I loved
The Style - In every way shape and form this game is reminiscent of the Grindhouse era of film; a time when low budgets, and cheesy characters, were not only accepted but also applauded. There are a number of instances where the game cuts out to broken reels, and funny messages about visiting the snack bar. I have never been a fan of Grindhouse but this game is true to the genre and worthy to carry its title.
360-degree gunfire - While running walls, sliding, or jumping you can literally turn in any direction to gun down your enemies. It is nice because you are often surrounded and need to turn to shoot multiple enemies. It also allows you to chain together some satisfying combos that will help you rack up points.
Rubi Malone - I enjoyed the character of Rubi Malone. Maybe not so much for depth but rather for style, and Rubi has style! Voiced by Eliza Dushku of Dollhouse, Rubi is a no-nonsense hired gun that can go toe-to-toe with the baddies of the mob world and not break a sweat.
What I hated
Platforming - The controls do not flow as well as I hoped, and because of this, platforming is greatly hindered. You have Rubi vision, which you can activate at anytime but you have to hold the trigger down to use it, and it is also the same button that is used to wall run. You tend to run on walls when you only wanted to simply jump to a ledge.
Camera angles GRRR - They make platforming extremely hard. You will often be playing within maps that are difficult to platform within and you have to carefully plan your jumps (which are hard while being shot at) because if you miss them you are punished severely for it. Often you will play in maps that only have one path of platforming and if you fall from it, you die.
Every other character other than Rubi - In design and style, the other characters of the game are far less interesting than Rubi. You'll run into characters that have designs, which look about as interesting as storefront mannequin, with the dialog to match.
My 2 cents From the music style, to the art direction, to the characters you will encounter, this game is all about the grind and or the house. If you are looking for a Grindhouse style game that is reminiscent of the film styles of Tarantino - then this is your game, however the controls and bad camera angles ultimately diminish your experience. That aside, Wet is a great representation of the Grindhouse genre of film and is worthy to carry its title. We give Wet 3 out of 5 stars.
