Malicious ATM at DEFCON: You can't trick a trickster

During the DEFCON hackers conference, which kicked off a few days ago, a certain crook made the mistake of trying to run an ATM scam. The crook must have been unaware of the fact that the DEFCON conference was running because he placed an ATM right in the heart of the event, within the Riviera Hotel Casino.

It was there only a short time before DEFCON attendees had grown suspicious of it. One DEFCON organizer thought the tinted glass on the machine looked odd. He then took a flashlight to it and discovered a PC where the ATM's camera should have been. The authorities were immediately notified and the machine was confiscated.

The machine works like a real ATM but once an individual slides his card inside, it copies the card information and then records the pin they enter. The crook can then duplicate the victims ATM card and use the pin number to empty their account. No one can be sure how many people were ripped off before the malicious ATM was discovered, but it is now in the possession of the authorities.
