Although some of you would like to avoid it, trust me, I have no problem bringing up your childhood woes. Here are my top 5 picks for video games your parents wouldn't let you play.
Doom
Whether it was the violence, or the demonic overtones, or the fact that it was involved in Columbine, parents hated this game. Doom was seen as violent, desensitizing, and a murder simulator for teens. Now that notion is laughable, but at the time it was pretty scary. I still get a little creeped out when I hear the music at the opening of the game.
The Grand Theft Auto Series
Take your pick of any criminal activity and you can find it in Grand Theft Auto. Murder, Theft, and who can forget prostitution? Every type inappropriate behavior conceivable can be committed within this game. Almost every crime scenario had been exhausted within the franchise, until Grand Theft Auto 4 came along. The new Drunk Driving feature included in the game got quite a bit of controversy. Sigh, now this franchise is finally complete.
Mortal Kombat
My parents were pretty cool about what I played. That aside, this was the only video game I was forbidden to lay eyes on. The fact that you could pull an entire bone structure out of a person and then watch their body fall to the ground in some type of Jello-like goop, probably was the reason why. One of the most violent video games in history, Mortal Kombat made a lot of parents uncomfortable.
Manhunt
The whole concept of manhunt revolved around the idea of killing for entertainment. Sounds pleasant huh? Rescued from death row by a Sadist, and dropped in the most brutal gang territory on earth, your mission is simple, kill and be good at it! With cameras covering every corner of the gang territory your captor/guide can see every move you make. I think the highlight of the game is when you cut a guys head off with a wire saw, and then your captor says over a walkie talkie “you're really getting me off!” Yuck!
BMX - XXX
I think the reason this game is on the list is obvious. BMX racing glorifies mischief, reveling, and reckless behavior. I think the whole X rated content played a part in it too, but who really knows? If you somehow got away with playing the other games on this list, I am sure you didn't get that luxury with this title. Best known for its un-lockable stripteases cut scenes and “Topless mode.” BMX XXX is hands down the most forbidden game on this list.
