James Cameron's Avatar trailer impressions

At long last, the teaser trailer for James Cameron's Avatar has finally been released. It premiered today on Apple - after a few minor hiccups, the highly hyped film is set for release December 18 worldwide. Purposely kept secret during its production, fans are getting their first real glimpse of the film today.

This film has captured the imagination of film goers for some time now, and has been in the works for decades. After all the hype, the secrecy, and painful anticipation, one question remains. Will this film live up to our expectations? If you are making that judgment based on this trailer then the answer is a resounding no!

Yes the visuals are stunning, and the environments are fantastic, and the CGI is excellent but it seems like it has all been done before. The visual style seems oddly reminiscent of Aliens, feel free to call me out on this if you disagree. The CGI, although excellent, seems very cartoon-ish. Lastly the fantasy style environments remind me of illustrations from classic fantasy novels, and by classic I mean the cracked out ones of the 70's. Not that any of that is bad, it is just contradictory to the totally original film we have been promised.

All ranting aside I think Avatar will be an excellent film but will it be worth the several decades of work, and anticipation that have been pored into it? That question remains.
