Today Barnes & Noble announced that they will officially be releasing a free B&N eReader app for the Apple iPad. An announcement that seems strange considering Apple and B&N are in the trenches of an eReader war.

The app will be released around the same time as the iPad's expected availability. It will give users access to over a million books, magazines, and newspapers within the Barnes & Noble eBookstore. Along with their iPad app B&N also offers free eReader software for PC, Mac, iPhone, and so on.

It seems Barnes & Noble has taken a less than exclusive approach to how they get their eBooks to readers, stating that the iPad eRaeder app was "continuing to fulfill our promise of providing consumers any book, any time, any where."
