Flixster acquires Rotten Tomatoes from IGN

Today has been quite the day for acquisitions! First off we heard news of Seesmic acquiring Ping.fm, and now we have news of a Flixster acquisition. It is being reported that Flixster, a site known for generated movie ratings has purchased Rotten Tomatoes from IGN.

flixsterThe total amount for the purchase is unclear at this time but the acquisition seems certain. Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes are both very similar sites, which focus on user generated reviews and ratings for films. A deal between the two seems like a logical choice.

There had been a rumor that Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes would be merging but there is nothing to indicate that at this point. If anything both sites are said to remain totally separate. News Corp. which is the parent company of IGN Entertainment, will receive a minority stake in Flixster as part of the deal.

What do you think of the deal? Think it is a nice fit, or are you worried about any changes that may come to Rotten Tomatoes because of it? Let us know what you think.
