Google has never really taken on the role of an Internet provider but it seems they will soon be trying it out. Today the search giant announced it will begin providing high-speed broadband networks in a number of trial locations in the United States.

"Our goal is to experiment with new ways to help make Internet access better and faster for everyone."

The company is offering an "ultra high-speed" broadband networks with 1GB per second fiber-to-the-home connections in a number of select areas for testing. Some 50,000 to 500,000 people will be testing a connection that Google describes as being "100 times" faster than what most Americans experience.

Google is putting out the invite to individuals who are interested today. If you would like to respond head to Google's fiber communities page. Responses will be collected from individuals until March 26.
