With the anniversary of the Iranian revolution right around the corner, authorities have taken steps to deter citizens from taking part in any upcoming protests. Today the Wall Street Journal is reporting that one of the measures taken by authorities is an all out ban on Google Gmail service.

Iran ProtestThe WSJ stated that “Iran's telecommunications agency announced what it described as a permanent suspension of Google Inc.'s email services, saying instead that a national email service for Iranian citizens would soon be rolled out.”

Whether or not the ban will be permanent is unclear at this point but it is safe to assume it is, as a national email service is being set up for citizens currently.

The Gmail ban seems to only be the beginning of the crackdown. The WSJ is reporting that citizens have had their mobile phones confiscated, and even their satellites removed from the roofs of their homes.

Google has not yet responded to the suspension.
