Originally an oxygen generator for a NASA Mars mission, the Bloom Box has been converted into a fuel cell. By using oxygen fed in through one side, and fuel through the other, the box can produce electricity. The type of fuel that the Bloom Box uses to produce electricity can vary between natural gas, renewable fuels, or solar power.

The boxes consist of sheets of ceramic that are painted with a green and black ink on each side. The ceramic sheets are then placed in between a cheap metal alloy. Each ceramic sheet can power one light bulb. Place 64 stacks of these ceramic sheets together and you can power a Starbucks.

Google, eBay, and FedEx are just a few of the companies currently using the Bloom Box. The company behind the box, Bloom Energy will reveal new details on the device Wednesday but until then you can watch the report from CBS 60 Minutes.
